What is Feather?

If you are a believer or interested in the fashion and garment industry, you must have heard about the two words “feathers”. Indeed! This is one of the materials that have been, are and will be used to “create civil products to serve” life.

Feathers are small, light, and fluffy. Each feather has the ability to occupy a large temperament body that creates a unique ability to hold punches. With a lightweight, porous structure and good heat retention, feathers are often a raw material for making life jackets, coats, household pillows…

Feathers are made from what feathers?

Since ancient times, people have been very smart when they realized that they can “keep” their body warm in the cold season by using the feathers of poultry such as geese or ducks. By cleaning and sterilizing these feathers, they can use them to make clothes and everyday items. Wherever we go, we can easily find these types of poultry.

Thus, although all poultry and birds have feathers, ducks and geese are nevertheless the two main sources of raw materials exploited by humans. Because geese are usually heavier than ducks, their feathers are also larger. Along with that is the quality and price of feathers from the goose are also more expensive.

How are feathers handled?

Raw poultry feathers after being purchased will be washed and processed to be used as raw materials for the garment and textile industry. First, the feathers will be washed and dried in specialized equipment to “clean”, deodorize and disinfect. Feathers that are cleaned, disinfected, and disinfected must be washed for at least 1 hour, then dried for 3 minutes at a temperature of  100 – 120 degrees Celsius. feathers based on their quality and size using specialized machines.

Therefore, because of such treatment, feathers are often gray and white. In the garment and textile industry, white feathers are valued more because consumers prefer products with bright colors. Therefore, manufacturers will prioritize using white feathers to  create products such as blankets, pillows and feather coats.
